Cultures aren’t built or destroyed overnight, and are sometimes hard to define, but you know both a truly great and an absolutely awful culture when you see them. How do average cultures become great? How do great cultures stagnate?
Cultures are built collectively, by all of the people within your organization. But great cultures must be mindfully shaped, or they will crumble over time. A few bad actors in key positions can undermine everything you hope to build. Without a plan for the future, buy-in from the right people, and a shared vision from everyone involved, any culture change effort is doomed.
Just cultures breed trust while assuring compliance. There are many ways to approach this, but we prefer the eastern philosophy developed by Deming and others to drive the quality leap in 1980s Japan, which leveraged the concept of honor to promote doing the right thing right, and for the right reasons. You create a just culture when you reward people for providing improvement-related information, but are also clear about the line between acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
Convergent Performance can help you make your good culture great, or reverse a culture trending downward. If achieving a just culture is your sole focus, we will support you—but we’re also able to build culture improvement solutions into any of our customized program offerings. True culture change takes time, but we will provide you with effective training, a long-term plan, and the right tools to make culture improvement not only possible, but inevitable.
